PCB Assembly Process and Technology

02. Through-hole Technology Assembly Process


The through-hole components are placed on one side of the PCB board and soldered on the other; they are soldered using wave soldering or hand soldering.

THT assembly process step is as follows:

Step 1 – Components Placements
The components are placed on the PCB board with pins passing through the via holes. The components placement can be either manual or automatic machine.

Step 2 – Soldering
The through-hole components soldering can be either manual or wave soldering.
Wave soldering is done at a high temperature.

Step 3 – Inspection and Functionality testing
The through-hole PCB is also inspected to find potential assembly flaws and later tested to check its functionality, like SMT assembly.unctionality testing stage. This is to ensure that the PCB performs the required functions.

01. Surface Mount Technology Assembly Process


Apply solder paste; components are placed in PCBs. This PCB assembly technology is termed Surface Mount technology. It has small components as compared to Through-hole Technology.

The SMT PCB assembly process is as follows:

Step 1 – Apply Solder Paste to the pads of the PCB
Stencil is an indispensable tool for solder paste printing. Surface mount devices are placed on the PCB board after applying solder. Solder paste inspection will be applied to this stage.

Step 2 – Components placement
Once the solder paste has been applied to the circuit board, the board is ready for component soldering. The pick and place process of SMD is automated.

Step 3 – Reflow Soldering
The solder paste and components have been placed on the circuit board now, and then the next step is the reflow soldering process.

Step 4 – Assembly Inspection
To ensure the quality of surface mounting, we will apply the following inspection methods:

    Automatic Optical Inspection
    X-ray Inspection

    First Article Inspection


    Step 5 – Functionality Testing
    After the PCB successfully passes the inspection phase, it goes through the functionality testing stage. This is to ensure that the PCB performs the required functions.

    03. Mixed Technology PCB Assembly Process


    Sometimes, Through-hole and Surface mount technology will be used simultaneously.

    Single side mixed
    All these procedures, such as applying solder paste, components Placement, Reflow soldering, Placement via Through-hole parts, and Wave soldering, respectively, are mandatory.

    Among the two sides, SMT One is THT
    Procedures like Surface mount technology, SMD Placement, Solidification, Flipping, THT parts placement, and Wave soldering, respectively, must be followed for the requirements.

    Double side mixed
    In this case, PCB assembly can be processed either with adhesive or without adhesive. Surface mount adhesive is the optional step. All the steps of the single side and among the two sides are used. For non-adhesive, you have to skip the step SMT adhesive step.
